One of the most common questions I hear from customers is:

“How much does it cost to hire movers in the GTA?”

After operating a moving company throughout Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area for many years, I can tell you that there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Every move is different, and two moves that appear similar on paper can end up having very different final costs.

While most articles online provide generic averages, I want to share what actually affects moving costs based on real-world experience completing thousands of moves across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, North York, Scarborough, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and the surrounding GTA.

Typical Moving Costs in the GTA

Although every move is unique, here are some realistic examples based on common moves we perform.

1-Bedroom Condo Move Within Toronto

A typical one-bedroom condo move within Toronto usually takes between 3 and 5 hours with two movers and a truck.

The average cost is often around $720.

2-Bedroom Condo Move From North York to Vaughan

For a standard two-bedroom condo move from North York to Vaughan, most moves take approximately 5 to 7 hours with two movers and a truck.

The average cost is typically around $990.

3-Bedroom House Move From Mississauga to Oakville

A three-bedroom house move usually requires three movers and a truck.

Depending on access, preparation, and travel conditions, these moves often take between 5 and 10 hours.

The average cost is typically around $1,900.

These examples are intended to provide a general idea, but the final cost depends on factors that many customers never consider.

The Biggest Factors That Affect Moving Costs

In my experience, the amount of furniture is only one piece of the puzzle.

The biggest factors affecting moving costs are often related to building access, traffic, and logistics.

Distance Between Locations

The distance between your old and new home certainly matters, but in the GTA, traffic often plays an even bigger role.

A move across Toronto during rush hour can sometimes take longer than a move between neighbouring cities outside peak traffic periods.

The more time spent on the road, the longer the overall move will take.

Traffic Conditions

Anyone who lives in the GTA knows how unpredictable traffic can be.

Construction, accidents, road closures, and rush hour congestion can significantly affect moving timelines.

What appears to be a short drive on Google Maps may turn into a much longer trip on moving day.

Elevators

Condo moves are often where customers experience the biggest surprises.

One of the first questions we ask is whether a service elevator has been booked.

If movers have dedicated access to a service elevator, the move can proceed efficiently. If elevators are shared with residents or unavailable when needed, valuable time can be lost throughout the day.

Multiple Elevators

Many modern condo complexes require movers to use more than one elevator.

In some buildings, movers take one elevator to reach a common area and then transfer to another elevator to access the unit.

Every additional step adds time to the move.

Long Hallways

This is one of the most overlooked factors when estimating moving costs.

Customers often assume that because they live in a condo, the move should be straightforward.

However, some buildings have exceptionally long hallways between the unit and the elevator. Others have long distances between the loading dock and the elevator itself.

When movers make dozens of trips throughout the day, those extra distances add up quickly.

Customer Preparation

The more organized a customer is before moving day, the faster the move typically goes.

When everything is packed, labelled, and ready to go, movers can focus entirely on loading and transportation rather than spending time organizing loose items.

Less time means lower moving costs.

The Biggest Misconception About Hiring Movers

The biggest mistake I see customers make is focusing only on the hourly rate.

Many people call several companies and immediately choose the lowest number they hear.

Unfortunately, moving costs do not work that way.

A company charging a lower hourly rate may take significantly longer to complete the move. An experienced and efficient crew may charge slightly more per hour but finish the job much faster.

The result is that the customer often pays less overall despite the higher hourly rate.

I always tell customers to focus on value, experience, efficiency, reputation, and reviews rather than simply looking for the cheapest hourly rate.

The cheapest hourly rate does not necessarily mean the cheapest move.

A Real Example That Explains Why Moving Costs Vary

One of the best examples High Level Movers can share happened recently with one of our customers.

We initially moved their belongings from a condo into storage.

The move took approximately four hours.

The reason it went so quickly was simple. The elevator was located almost directly beside the unit. The path between the elevator and the truck was short and efficient.

Several months later, the same customer hired us to move the exact same belongings out of storage and into another condo.

The customer expected the move to take roughly the same amount of time.

Instead, the move took approximately seven hours.

Nothing changed regarding the furniture.

The same amount of belongings was being moved.

The difference was the building.

The new condo required movers to use multiple elevators, and the hallways were extremely long. Every trip between the truck and the unit took considerably longer.

By the end of the day, those extra minutes added several hours to the move.

The customer was understandably frustrated because they saw the same furniture and expected the same timeline.

From a moving perspective, however, the buildings were completely different.

This is exactly why professional movers ask detailed questions about elevators, loading areas, parking, and building access before providing estimates.

How to Save Money on Your Move

Over the years, I’ve noticed that customers who spend a little time preparing before moving day often save hundreds of dollars.

Pack Before Movers Arrive

One of the easiest ways to reduce moving costs is to have everything packed before the crew arrives.

If movers need to stop and pack loose items throughout the day, the move will take longer and cost more.

Use Proper Moving Boxes

I strongly recommend using standard moving boxes.

Ideally, stick to two or three common box sizes rather than using dozens of different container types.

Boxes can be stacked efficiently and moved using dollies, allowing movers to transport many items at once.

Avoid Garbage Bags

This is one piece of advice I give regularly.

Many customers believe packing belongings into garbage bags will save time.

In reality, it often slows the move down.

Boxes can be loaded onto a dolly and moved in large quantities. Garbage bags usually need to be carried by hand.

If your building has long hallways, movers may only be able to carry one or two bags in each hand.

Multiply that by dozens of trips and you can see how quickly moving time increases.

Declutter Before Moving

The fewer items you move, the lower your moving costs will be.

Selling, donating, or disposing of unwanted items before moving day reduces both labour time and truck space requirements.

Reserve Elevators Early

If you’re moving from or into a condo, reserve the service elevator as soon as possible.

This simple step can help avoid delays and keep your move running smoothly.

Why Toronto Condo Moves Are Different

A large percentage of GTA residents live in condominiums, and condo moves often present challenges that homeowners never encounter.

Common issues include:

  • Service elevator booking requirements
  • Limited loading dock access
  • Underground parking restrictions
  • Multiple elevator transfers
  • Long hallways
  • Strict moving time windows
  • Building management requirements

In many cases, these factors have a greater impact on moving costs than the actual distance between locations.

Final Thoughts

The average cost of movers in the GTA depends on far more than the size of your home.

Traffic, building access, elevators, hallway length, distance between locations, and customer preparation all influence the final bill.

From my experience, the best way to receive an accurate moving estimate is to provide as much information as possible about your home, your building, and the items being moved.

And remember, when comparing moving companies, don’t focus only on the hourly rate.

Focus on the overall value, the experience of the crew, and the company’s reputation.

In the moving industry, efficiency often saves customers more money than a lower hourly rate ever will.
