How It Started...
Let’s take a look at how it all began: In early 2010 High Level Movers was a small startup moving company featuring one large truck and two men. These two best friends, Kevin and Eugene, chose to become business partners and began by moving clients around Toronto, Ontario, and the GTA.
They began utilizing all cost-effective methods to promote their moving services, including online platforms and social media. They posted ads on facebook community groups and business pages. They posted on free online classified advertising pages. They also posted advertisements on flyers, and local community newspapers. Because moving is an essential service, it wasn’t long before the calls started coming in and the trucks began moving.
As a small startup business, these two movers had minimal experience running a moving company. They were learning as they go, in all aspects of the business, including marketing and advertising, inventory, sales, accounting, and so forth. They did have a goal though, and that was to eventually expand into a multi-provincial moving company with many trucks in major cities throughout Canada. Their goal was to become a leading competitor in the Canadian moving market.
Over the next 5 years High Level Movers planted its roots and the business began to take hold. They expanded in size of employees and in the number of moving trucks they had. As they grew it became necessary to have a home base (or a main office), where they could park their trucks. Also, with expansion there was also a clear need for warehouse space. Clients were requesting additional services that required more from the company. Services like packing and packing supplies, storage, and cleaning all meant that the business needed additional resources and deeper investments. This the time at which the main office relocated to a large warehouse in North York. This warehouse was big enough to hold supplies and moving materials. It also had enough space to offer storage units for clients to rent. As well, it offered parking for the additional trucks the company acquired. The storage services also provided a source of income for the company to afford the new parking and warehouse space.
This is the point at which the company hired its first administrative assistant who also worked as a sales representative. Her name was Lia. Lia was responsible for taking all calls that came in. She would explain all the standardized rates to clients and who was interested would then place a booking with her. Lia had a natural talent for sales, and took her job to the next level. She pitched the company’s moving services in a way that positively exemplified the company. She had a fantastic booking to call ratio, and this helped the company grow. It also revealed a need for a system to standardize all quotes and organize all the bookings.
The next steps focused on marketing and web development. The owners hired a web developer who created a professional website that allowed clients to request a quote online. Lia, who was concurrently studying in University, acted as the company’s content writer, and created the content for the website. Following this, the owners then began to research how to develop a Google Campaign that would allow them to appear on relevant keyword search. They initially began doing this on their own, and had some success, but the time commitment was great. They spent endless hours each day working on their Google Ad campaigns. They eventually decided to hire a professional SEO service that would work on all of their advertising for them (including social media platforms, Google ads, and related online marketing).
All aspects of the business began to change. Systems were implemented to standardize, log, track, and organize the way the business operates. A GPS system was introduced that would keep track of the trucks on route. Also, a formalized hiring process and training program was implemented to ensure all members of the team met a standard that the company wanted to uphold. Quality control and customer service were at the forefront of the company’s growth and expansion. Fast forward to today; High Level Movers has main offices in seven major cities throughout Canada, and continues to expand. There has been development in all facets of the business, including the Long Distance Moving Department, Business to Business Moving, Military Relocation, Professional Piano Moving, Packing Supplies and Packing Services, and Commercial and Residential departments.
